2018 Executive Board Nominations

At our November monthly meeting, nominations were accepted for our 2018 Executive Board. As only one nomination was received for each executive board position, elections will be conducted at our December meeting with our current Secretary, Cynthia Smith Barry, casting the sole vote for each nominee. Statements of nomination acceptance from each appear below:

PRESIDENT – Craig Tiede

Since first being nominated for, and elected, president of OLT in 2013, I have helped shepherd the organization through a period of change and growth, with the ultimate goal of ensuring it became known as one of the premiere community theater organizations in New Jersey. This past five years of work culminated in OLT receiving NJACT’s 2017 Community Theater of the Year award, demonstrating that we have made great strides and made our mark amongst our peers. Any community organization is only as good as the people it attracts and involves, and I am proud of who we’ve assembled and the work we’ve accomplished together. I remain committed to ensuring OLT builds on its reputation for presenting quality productions of lesser-produced works helmed by creative visionaries willing to take risks and become long-term members of our community of storytellers and artists. Whatever creative, logistical, interpersonal, or fiscal challenges lie ahead, I remain confident that my fair, open, experienced, and knowledgeable approach to the business behind our passions will continue to help OLT thrive.


I am honored to have the opportunity to serve as Vice President for a third consecutive term. Over the past few years there has been tremendous growth within our organization, and we are poised to use that momentum in exciting ways in 2018. I am committed to using my time and resources for not only the constituted responsibilities of my office, such as scheduling rehearsal space and managing rentals of our costumes and props, but increasing our community visibility with preview performances and the acquisition of local-business sponsors. I am fortunate to be part of such an inclusive and creative team of individuals that extends far beyond those sitting on the board. As NJACT’s 2017 Community Theatre of the Year, I am confident that the recognition we have received will support our goal of continuing to bring professional-level opportunities to those in and around Fair Lawn.

SECRETARY – Maureen McNulty

It is an honor to be nominated to serve as the secretary for the 2017-18 OLT Executive Board. This theatre has truly provided me with a supportive space to cultivate my love of theatre, something I did not think was possible after I graduated college. After trying out for a show two and a half years ago on a whim (and also because my friend wouldn’t stop bugging me), it seems like OLT has been a part of my life forever! In my time with OLT, I’ve been onstage in three productions and backstage for one. I look forward to the opportunities that serving on the board will provide me, especially in terms of helping this wonderful theatre continue to grow and provide the quality, professional theatre productions for which it is known.

TREASURER – Linda Wielkotz

I intend to run for the position of treasurer of Old Library Theatre for 2018. I’ve held the position for the last 2 years and am honored to run again. After being a member for 41 years I have seen the group go through many stages. I am happy to be a part of OLT and seeing it grow in a positive manner.



PUBLICITY CHAIR – Brendan Joel Bartlett
I am looking forward to assisting OLT with their publicity needs into their exciting new 2018 season. I’m excited about promoting the OLT agenda and exciting the community both close and distant to get involved and be inspired and enjoy our quality entertainment at a reasonable price by truly talented, caring individuals both on and off the stage. Having worked at OLT now for the last years has been fulfilling and worthwhile. Here’s to another year of learning and excitement and new relationships and lessons learned.

HOUSE MANAGER – Sheryl Heffernan

I am happy to have been nominated for a second term as House Manager. In the past year, I have established a Hospitality Committee and a House Committee to work with me. I could not have fulfilled the position with their help, and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of my team members. We cleaned out the Concession Stand storage area, purchased food-safe and air-tight storage boxes, and established par levels for supplies. The House Committee worked to ensure that the Storage Room in the basement meets fire safety standards. I have established a preferential seating for patrons with disabilities, by having them enter the theatre early when the house opens. This change has received a very positive response from our patrons. My goals for the coming year are to continue working to establish better order in the Storage Room and Office, to create written descriptions for responsibilities of front-of-the-house jobs, and to continue to try to gain members and additional patrons by making front-of–the-house and phone response experiences as friendly as possible for all who visit or contact Old Library Theatre.

WEBMASTER – Matt Haines

I am grateful and honored to serve on the Old Library Theatre executive board for another year. For the last three years, OLT has become a home for me. I believe it is a company that truly desires actors to feel at home and comfortable in their artistic endeavors. I am thrilled to continue to work on the board in hopes that we can continue to provide quality and affordable entertainment to our community. As webmaster, I strive to make sure our content is accessible to everyone who chooses to partake in community theatre.

Over the past four years, OLT has grown in quantity and quality – yet there is more work to do. There are many ways we can to continue to grow, develop and distinguish ourselves as a premier community theater organization. As we look ahead to our milestone 50th season, I’m excited by the opportunity to tell our company’s story while continuing to offer quality entertainment at affordable prices. It is my philosophy that community theater is both of, and for, the community and I strongly support OLT’s mission to welcome people in to the collaborative art of theater from all walks of life and levels of experience. As we continue to develop professionally, let us never lose sight of the importance of lifting up the friendly, dedicated, supportive and creative lovers of live theater who will ensure we continue to thrive for decades to come!

Vice President

Angela VidaangelasfaceLast year, my letter to our membership spoke about the feeling of community I experienced upon working with OLT for the first time. As the 2016 Vice President, that sense increased with my involvement with the board. Gaining familiarity with the fundamentals of a theatre company has proved invaluable. I had always considered myself an actor who was willing to go above and beyond what was expected of me, but I was humbled to discover how little insight I had into the process of bringing quality productions to the stage.I happily accept my nomination for Old Library Theatre’s 2017 Vice President, eager to usher our growing company into its landmark 50th season. Working alongside the rest of the board, I have clear and attainable goals for the year: expand our membership and increase their involvement in all aspects of our operations, continue to receive feedback from our patrons to create fulfilling theatrical experiences, serve as historian to strengthen our narrative as the company grows, and use the 50th season to involve the Fair Lawn community in new and creative ways. Please join me in making Old Library Theatre an organization we can all be proud to call our own.


Cynthia Smith BarrycynthiaWe are celebrating an exciting milestone at OLT as we enter its 50th Anniversary Season in 2017. Most recently, I have been in OLT’s productions of The Best Man, Oliver, and as ‘Big Mama’ in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, for which I received a 2015 Perry Nomination as Best Supporting Actress in a Play. I am enamored with this theatre group and all the people involved, so it is a real honor to be nominated to the Executive Board as Secretary. I understand this commitment involves serving a one year term on the board, attending and participating in a monthly board meeting, as well as various OLT functions throughout the year. I feel I would be a valuable Board Member, not only because I was a professional actress in the past, but my family and I have enjoyed living in Fair Lawn for over 33 years. I am so glad I made the decision to join OLT and to have repeatedly witnessed its quality and professionalism.


Linda WielkotzLindaW-218Linda is once again happy to be nominated as Treasurer. Linda has been a member for 41 years and has served in many positions. Being on the board involves dedication, wanting to see the group grow and making it a place for all to be involved, which was her goal in all the years involved. Linda is a producer, director and actor in the NJ/NY area and co producer on the upcoming Off Broadway musical Unexpected Joy. Happy 50th to OLT. Here’s to many more seasons.

Publicity Chair

Brendan Joel Bartlettbjb2I, Brendan Joel Bartlett, accept the role of publicity chair at OLT. In the past I have been glad to bring OLT’s image and plans to the community, friends and friends yet to be. I’m very proud to again be entrusted with this responsibility of keeping OLT current and in the public eye. I will do my best to send emails in a timely fashion, inform our friends and make OLT the #1 priority. Thank you so much for the nomination and continued trust of my abilities.

House Manager

Sheryl HeffernanSher1Sheryl is very happy to be nominated for the position of House Manager. This is a position that requires large expenditures of time and effort. As a person who is mostly retired, Sheryl has the necessary time and energy to devote to the job. She would like to have a House Committee, to assist with certain aspects of the position, including maintenance of our storage room, and purchasing items for the concession stand. Her initial plans include working with the Director of Recreation and Parks and the Fire Marshall to ensure compliance with fire safety codes, and cleaning & reorganizing the concession stand closet to promote effective use of the space.


Matthew HainesHainesI am honored to be nominated again to serve on the Executive Board for Old Library Theatre. I am still so grateful to be a member of this company, and I am thrilled to continue to work to provide a welcome environment that puts on fantastic productions. I feel as though serving on the board has given me insight into how to best help the company, and I believe that taking on the role of web master will be one where I can truly make a difference in the company. I will work to make sure our website provides all relevant information in a user friendly and efficient manner.

Budgeting a Season at OLT – An Open Letter from Our President


At our November Monthly Meeting, I facilitated a discussion about how the executive board approaches planning and budgeting a season at OLT. For those not able to join us in person, here’s what you missed!

When first elected president, I encouraged the organization to conduct an open assessment – asking patrons and members to provide feedback on their experiences with, and perceptions, of OLT. The results of this 2013 community satisfaction survey gave us many valuable insights, from which we enacted a few substantive changes.

A leading piece of feedback received indicated that, though the talent on-stage and off was of a high caliber, OLT was not investing financially in them (production teams and musicians), nor in the visual components patrons looked most forward to enjoying – namely set and costume design. As a result, we began a years-long process of reallocating resources, fundraising and other initiatives that would allow us to provide our productions with additional funding for those production aspects. We increased stipends for members of the production team, added a set designer to all main stage productions, and increased budgets for sets, props and costumes.

At this same time, we began collecting and logging data – a must for any business. It’s important for us to understand who our patrons and performers are, what shows they want to see and participate in, and how our productions perform over time. We’ve used data from the past four seasons to help us plan season selection and budget productions selected. This has allowed us both to raise the quality and quantity of our productions. In fact, it’s that very relationship – quality and quantity – and the public confusion about how each relies on the other, that prompted me to discuss our internal planning at our November meeting. It’s important to me and all members of the board that our performers, production teams and members have a full understanding of how, and why, we operate as we do.

First, let’s start with some numbers that will be important to keep in mind:

– We perform in a space that has a maximum capacity of 170. For each performance, that’s the maximum number of tickets that can be sold.
– We have a staggered ticket pricing structure, which at our patrons’ urging we have not changed. We remain committed to not raising ticket prices – which currently are $20 (Adults), $18 (Students/Seniors), $15 (Groups), $10 (Children Under 12/Members) and $5 (House Staff). Over the past four seasons, our average ticket price has been $17.87.
– Over the past four seasons, our average ticket sales across all productions is 91 seats per performance. That’s an overall sales percentage of 53.89%.
– As part of our relationship with the Borough of Fair Lawn – we’re the resident theater company! – we give 20% of all ticket sales to them, following each production.

OLT productions run for one or two weekends, for a total of 3, 4 or 6 performances. Six performance runs are given to main stage musicals, four performance runs are given to one-weekend special event musicals, and three performance runs are given to plays. These performance numbers are based on projected ticket sales balanced against the cost to produce and license each specific show. Plays are much cheaper to produce than musicals – both because they don’t require musicians and because licensing fees are much lower.

For a main stage musical, the maximum ticket sales intake for a sold-out six performance run (170 seats x 6 performances x $17.87) would be $18,227.40. Twenty percent of that would go to the Borough, leaving a maximum net profit of $14,581.92.

As previously noted, we sell an average of 53.89% of tickets. So, likely ticket sales intake for a main stage musical (91 seats x 6 performances x $17.87) would be $9,757,02. With twenty percent going to the Borough, that would leave us a maximum profit of $7805.62 — approximately $3000 below the typical budget currently set for a main stage musical.

In 2016, OLT set a season operating budget of $52,206.65, split across eight productions. As a self-funded, not-for-profit theater, we do not start with that money in the coffers; rather, we set our season operating budget based on what we believe we can make back through our revenue streams. There’s an argument that OLT should return to offering only its constitutionally-mandated four performances each season – one main stage play and three main stage musicals – as doing so would give more money to those productions and benefit the organization overall. But here’s why we don’t–

Let’s assume OLT presents four productions, each running for six performances, and were to maintain the same operating budget ($52,206.62). Given the funding needs of plays and musicals, in a four production season with the same overall operating budget, the starting budgets in this case would be:

– Play – $6425.83
– Musicals – $15,226.94 each

If each of these shows sold at our likely sales rate of 53.89%, the net loss for six performance runs of each would be as follows:

– Play – -$435.73
– Musicals – -$7421.31 each, or -$22,263.96 total

Over the course of one four-show season, this would cost OLT nearly $23,000. As we’re self-funded, not-for-profit and don’t operate from a donor base, this isn’t feasible.

Let’s then say that OLT presents four productions, each running for six performances, but decreased the season’s operating budget – keeping each production’s budget consistent with what was given to each 2016 production, but only for four shows instead of eight. In this case, the budgets would be:

– Play – $5084.28 (adjusted up $500 from 2016 budgets for 6 performance run)
– Musicals – $10,818 each

Under this scenario, if all shows sold at our likely sales rate of 53.89%, the net profit/loss for six performance runs of each would be as follows:

– Play – $1005.82
– Musicals – -$3012.38 each, or -$9037.14 total

Over the course of one four-show season, this would cost OLT more than $8,000.

In order for OLT to project a four-show season that would not lose money overall, production budgets would need to be cut by more than 20% across the board. Rather than increase the budgets for productions, less shows actually ends up meaning less money available for all.

In order to fund more lavish main-stage musicals, it’s proven vital that we also offer smaller, less expensive plays and musicals to help balance out the season financially. Despite all the data detailed above, theater isn’t always a science and what an audience does or does not respond to can’t always be predicted. Through additional offerings like youth productions, play festivals, concerts, original plays and musicals, OLT is able to offer a full season to capture audience’s imaginations – and to fund the bigger shows people want to see and perform in.

Our overall goal is to provide a diverse slate of performance and production opportunities that showcase talented folks in all forms. By offering more productions annually, not only do we ensure we remain fiscally viable, we also present performers and backstage talent with multiple opportunities to become involved. Not a singer? Audition for our plays! Not an adult? Audition for our youth productions! Not free during the school year? Audition for our summer productions! We plan seasons in hopes that everyone will find something that piques their interest – as performer, production team member or patron.

I’m proud of OLT’s growth these past four years and am excited to help shepherd the group into its milestone 50th season. But our growth isn’t about me – it’s about you! It is the community that you all bring to our community theater that has helped it thrive for fifty seasons and counting. As I always say to the cast and crew of each production: Thank you for sharing your time and talents with us. The world is our stage, and we’re very glad you’ve chosen to join us in telling the stories that both reflect, and change, our lives.
